Family Emergency Assistance Program

The Family Emergency Assistance Program provides short-term support to families experiencing a temporary financial hardship. Depending on available funding and program resources, assistance may include help with rent, utility payments, and food assistance.

The goal of the program is to help families stabilize their situation, avoid crisis, and work toward long-term self-sufficiency. Participants are expected to engage in case management, develop a financial plan, and work toward positive outcomes. Ongoing follow-up and support are important components of the program's success.

Often considered a homelessness prevention initiative, the program is designed to help families overcome temporary financial setbacks before they become larger challenges. All assistance is subject to funding availability, program guidelines, and eligibility requirements. Assistance is not guaranteed, and all applicants must complete an application process, provide required documentation, and participate in a brief interview before assistance can be considered.

Low- to moderate-income renters residing in Upper Cameron County or Willacy County may be eligible for rental or utility assistance through Loaves & Fishes' Homeless Prevention Program. Eligible households facing eviction or utility disconnection may qualify for assistance for up to three months, subject to available funding and program requirements. Helping to prevent homelessness in the Rio Grande Valley.

While rental and utility assistance is intended to provide short-term support, it can make a meaningful difference for families facing temporary financial challenges. Through individualized case management, participants work closely with a case manager to track employment and job search activities, monitor household expenses, and develop strategies for achieving greater financial stability.

The program is designed to help families build a stronger financial foundation and reduce the likelihood of future housing or utility crises. Active participation and engagement are important to achieving successful outcomes. Our goal is for participants to leave the program in a more stable financial position and with the tools needed to maintain that stability moving forward.
